Press Release

IBEX® Gender Equality Index reaches 53 components after annual review

8 June, 2023
  • The index, which measures the gender equality of Spanish listed companies and has increased in value by more than 10% over the year, incorporates eleven new listed companies
  • Companies must have between 25% and 75% female presence on their Board of Directors and between 15% and 85% in senior management to be included in the index

The IBEX® Gender Equality continues to grow. The Technical Advisory Committee has today decided to add eleven new listed companies and remove three from the index, which is the first index to measure the gender equality of Spanish listed companies. The changes will be effective from 19 June, so that from then onwards the index will be composed of 53 companies. The revision has been carried out on the basis of information published by the CNMV on the presence of women and men in the decision-making bodies of Spanish listed companies.

Atresmedia, Almirall, Atrys, Cellnex, DIA, Global Dominion, Gestamp, Grifols, Metrovacesa, Laboratorios Rovi and Vocento are added to the index, while Clínica Baviera, Libertas 7 and Tubos Reunidos are removed. Audax Renovables, Aena, Alantra, Acciona, Acciona Energía, Applus, BBVA, Bankinter, CaixaBank, Prosegur Cash, Cie Automotive, Inmobiliaria Colonial, Ebro Foods, Ence, Enagás, Faes Farma, GAM, Grenergy, IAG, Iberdrola, Indra, Inditex, Línea Directa, Logista, Lar España, Mapfre, Duro Felguera, Melia Hotels, Nicolás Correa, Deoleo, Oryzon, Pharma Mar, Prim, Prisa, Red Eléctrica, Repsol, Realia, Sabadell, Santander, Soltec, Telefónica and Unicaja.

Of the 53 components of the index (eight more than before), 24 are from the IBEX 35® (four more), 12 from the IBEX Medium Cap® (five more), 12 from the IBEX Small Cap (the same as before) and five companies from the Madrid Stock Exchange General Index (IGBM) that are not in any of the previous indices (one less).

Carmen López, Head of Indices at BME, explains that "the number of companies that meet the gender equality requirements for inclusion in the IBEX® Gender Equality index has grown steadily in recent years, to the point that it has more than quintupled in just five years. This index is a thermometer of gender equality in Spanish listed companies and serves as a guide for investors who take this aspect into account when composing their portfolios".

The universe taken as a reference in this diversity indicator calculated by BME is the General Index of the Madrid Stock Exchange (IGBM) and the requirement to be part of it is that companies have between 25% and 75% female presence on their Board of Directors and between 15% and 85% in senior management.

So far this year, the IBEX® Gender Equality has risen by 12.2%, a rise that increases to 14.6% in the case of the IBEX® Gender Equality Total Return.
