BME and Bankinter Bring Capital Markets Closer to Retail Investors

More than 300 Bankinter clients attended the event held at the Madrid Stock Exchange Palace, while many others followed it online.

The event provided an opportunity to discuss market developments and focus on one of BME’s strategic priorities: bringing capital markets closer to retail investors.

During her remarks, Patricia Moreno, Head Business Development and Strategy Spain at BME, highlighted the strong performance of the Spanish stock market. Following an exceptional 2025, trading volume increased by more than 30% in the first nine months of 2026. At the end of September, the IBEX 35 stood above 19,000 points and had gained 12% since the beginning of the year.

Beyond these figures, Moreno emphasised the role of capital markets as essential infrastructure for connecting savings with investment, supporting corporate financing and contributing to economic growth.

Against this backdrop, BME is working to increase retail investor participation through its Retail Strategy, in which Bankinter participates. The initiative aims to make it easier for individuals to access the stock market and provide them with liquidity and the best possible execution conditions. To achieve this, BME is working with its liquidity providers to tighten spreads and increase available market depth. As Moreno noted, BME offers the best prices available in Europe for IBEX 35 securities.

Another key challenge is to channel a greater share of household savings into productive investment. In this context, BME has actively supported the creation of a savings and investment account in Spain and welcomes the recent establishment of the Financia Europa Savings and Investment Account (CAIFE). This new instrument is intended to channel household savings towards capital markets, although its launch is still subject to the corresponding regulatory development.

Collaboration between BME, institutions such as Bankinter and the financial industry as a whole will be essential to build a more liquid, competitive and accessible Spanish market, where companies and investors can come together under the best possible conditions.
