Long Tradition in the European Derivatives Markets

MEFF is BME’s Derivatives Exchange and since 2020 part of Switzerland's SIX Group. MEFF – as the reference Exchange for stock options on Spanish underlyings – has a long tradition of financial culture and best practice, constantly investing in innovation and development. MEFF has been the Spanish market for derivative products since 1989 and is widely recognized both, nationally and internationally, for being one of the main European derivatives markets.

Financial Futures and Options Trading

MEFF offers two segments: with 45 participants the segment for Financial Derivatives (Futures and Options on IBEX 35 and Single Stocks, Dividend Index Futures, Stock Dividend Futures and 10-year National Bond Futures) and with 41  participants the Electricity Derivatives (MEFF Power) segment. The trading starts at 9 am until 5.35 pm for the entire product range, the index futures are traded from 8 am to 10 pm. The High Frenquency Traders and Market Makers ensure liquidity which leads to very competitive order books, transparent pricing and tight spreads. MEFF offers equal access, providing the best connections for all participants. This also includes co-location, London hub, and direct connection to central gateways.

MEFF offers more than 40 single stock options that include 10 of the leading Spanish companies. With an average annual market share of 72.5 % (average over the past 5 years) it is the reference market for stock options on Spanish underlyings.

Our market makers ensure a consistent price picture throughout the trading day, they offer competitive quotes and liquidity for larger sizes than the order book can absorb to generate high liquidity and tight spreads. With this they are enabled to show their best quotes and most competitive sizes.

Financial Derivatives & Commodities Derivatives

MEFF offers liquid instruments that are perfectly suited to meet their clients needs:

  • Futures on indices allow market participants to easy hedge, invest and position in the market. There are futures on the well-known Spanish blue chip index IBEX 35® as well as on Mini IBEX 35® which is often used by retail clients. The trading hours are from 8 am to 8 pm.
  • Options on indices allow market participants to create more complex strategies, they are often traded as a block. The trading hours are from 9 am to 5:35 pm. If you are interested in analysing the historical performance of the IBEX 35 index, visit IBEX 35 prices for more details.

MEFF offers a wide range of stock futures. Among which you can find, Futures on Spanish Stocks, Stock Dividend Futures and Stock Dividend Futures Plus with six maturities open for trading, three maturities for Dividend Futures and Dividend Futures Plus. They are often traded as a block.

MEFF is the reference market for single stock options for Spanish underlyings. These allow market participants to create more complex strategies. There are good reasons why one should trade on MEFF: high liquidity and tight spreads, delta facility on block trades, competitive fees and straightforward exercise and settlement. Both European and American style options are available, with 17 maturities open for trading.

The futures in the xRolling® FX offer trading in currencies and hedging exchange risk with the safety and transparency of a regulated market. The xRollicontractsng® FX contracts are "perpetual" Futures on the 17 most actively traded currency pairs, with extended market hours from 00:00 to 23:00. They can be traded from Monday to Friday and are distributed by MEFF members and settled and cleared in BME Clearing, the BME Central Counterparty.
