BME has organised a programme of activities to celebrate Financial Literacy Day, which takes place on 5 October. In addition to the traditional webinars organised by Instituto BME, we will hold the customary Financial Literacy Opening Bell Ceremony, in an event presided over by Spain’s Minister of Economy, Trade and Business and First Deputy Prime Minister, Carlos Cuerpo, together with BME CEO Juan Flames. This Opening Bell Ceremony forms part of the Finanzas para Todos initiative, promoted by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Business, the CNMV and the Bank of Spain.
One of the primary functions of stock exchanges is to provide access to financing. However, for capital markets to remain robust, transparent and secure, investment in financial education is essential. This is a long-standing objective that extends well beyond Spain.
This is why organisations such as the World Federation of Exchanges (WFE) and IOSCO launched the Financial Literacy Opening Bell initiative at a global level, an initiative that BME has supported since its inception as part of World Investor Week.
In Spain, the most prominent initiative is Finanzas para Todos. It is the official brand and reference portal of Spain’s Financial Education Plan, an initiative promoted by the Bank of Spain and the National Securities Market Commission (CNMV), together with the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Business. The initiative currently includes more than 70 institutions and organisations in its collaboration network, among them BME.
Its objective is to improve citizens’ financial literacy so that they can manage their money and financial products responsibly and make informed decisions. Launched in 2008 following recommendations from the European Union and the OECD, it provides practical guides, planning tools such as budgeting and savings calculators, and a dedicated educational programme for primary and secondary schools. In addition, it organises an official Financial Literacy Day event every year. Held on the first Monday of October, the event brings together senior representatives from leading institutions to highlight the importance of improving financial literacy among citizens.
Initiatives at BME
This year, we are joining Financial Literacy Day through a range of high-impact initiatives. First, through Instituto BME, we will host a series of webinars open to all audiences. These three online sessions are designed for the general public and will cover the fundamentals of saving, investing and financial planning, demonstrating how these tools can contribute to greater financial stability, the achievement of personal and family goals, and better financial decision-making throughout life.
In addition, we will hold the traditional Ring the Bell for Financial Literacy Ceremony, which this year will be part of the official “Finanzas para Todos” agenda. The event will take place at the Madrid Stock Exchange Palace and will be presided over by Carlos Cuerpo, Minister of Economy, Competitiveness, and Enterprise and First Vice President of the Government, who will be joined by BME’s CEO, Juan Flames. This year’s slogan is “Save. Invest. Move Forward.”
