Last November, Iberclear, Spain’s central securities depository, successfully completed the recertification process under the National Security Scheme (ENS), obtaining the highest-level accreditation for two more years (2025–2027). This certification ensures compliance with stringent security requirements for managing the National Registry of Greenhouse Gas Emission Allowances (RENADE), a service Iberclear provides to the Ministry for Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge under the public tender awarded last year.

The ENS establishes a security framework for electronic systems in the public sector and related entities, setting minimum standards for confidentiality, integrity, availability, authenticity, and traceability. Achieving this certification required a thorough review of security policies, roles, risk analysis, and improvement plans, reinforcing the robustness of the service.

Since 2005, Iberclear has managed RENADE, which records the issuance, ownership, transfer, and cancellation of emission allowances. Following the 2012 migration to the EU Single Registry, Iberclear acts as the National Administrator for Spain, working closely with the Spanish Office for Climate Change, regional authorities, and over 2,000 registry users.

The National Registry of Greenhouse Gas Emission Rights is the instrument which ensures the publicity and continual update of the ownership and control of emission rights. This Registry allows an exact count to be made of the issuance, ownership, transfer and cancellation of emission rights and the units defined within the scope of the Kyoto Protocol.
