This bank stems from a financial institution belonging to Florencio
Rodríguez-Vega Bufín which was founded in 1872 in Salamanca.
It was the first privately owned bank in this city.

In 1957, the bank took a stake in Banco Popular. As of 1965 the bank
began to expand in the region of Castilla-León, opening offices in Zamora
and Avila and in 1970 it changed its name to Banco de Castilla.

Most of the expansion took place in 1977-82.
